Q:

99 POINTS POSSIBLE, PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bella decides she wants to make a fruit snack for 1st and 2nd period math classes. She searched pinterest and facebook until she found the perfect recipe. The recipe calls for 3 1/10 pounds of strawberries, 4 2/5 pounds of blueberries, and 2 1/4 pounds of blackberries. The recipe will make 24 servings. The local Kroger ad has strawberries for $1.99 per pound and blueberries for $3.59 a pound. Bella decides she wants to get her blackberries from the local farmer;s market from the Cordes Berry Farm. They sell them in 1/4 pound containers for $0.59 each.1. How many pounds of fruit will Bella need in total to make the fruit snack for both questions?Bella has an $100 gift card for Kroger, she wants to know how much she will have left on the gift card. In order to help her out, she will need to know how much each fruit is going to cost her. (remember, Bella got the blackberries from the farmer's market, so don't count that with how much she'll have left on the Kroger gift card.)1. How much will she spend on strawberries (show work and use decimals!)2. How much will she spend on blueberries (show work and use decimals!)3.How much will she spend on blackberries (show work and use decimals!)4. How much total money will she spend on fruit? (include blackberries in this, just not in the next question, show work and use decimals!)5. How much will be left on the gift card? (show work!)

Accepted Solution

A:
To ease calculation let's transform the mixed fractions into improper fractions
and after to numbers

3 1/10 pounds of strawberries,  = 31/10  = 3.1  lb
4 2/5 pounds of blueberries,  = 22/5        = 4.4  lb
and 2 1/4 pounds of blackberries = 9/4   = 2.25 lb

 How many pounds of fruit  3.1 + 4.4 + 2.25 = 9.75 lb

1. How much will she spend on strawberries: 3.1 x 1.99 = $6.169

2. How much will she spend on blueberries 4.4 x 3.59 = $15.796

3.1/4 lb costs $0.59, so 1 lb costs 4 x 0.59 = $2.36
Then she spends on blackberries 2.25 x 2.36 = $5.31

4. How much total money will she spend: 6.169+15.796+5.31 = $27.28

5. How much will be left on the gift card. In this cae note that what she bought from the farm has nothing to do with the 100$ gift card, so

$100 - Strawberry ($6.169) - Blueberry ($15.796) = $78.03
